This stream of the Northwest Territories Nominee Program (NTNP) is designed to attract professionals who can provide a service that is in demand in the Northwest Territories, by establishing business outlets or professional practices.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must meet the requirements listed below to be eligible to apply under the Northwest Territories Self-employed Business Stream:

  • Have a profession that is identified as a professional skill shortage.
  • Satisfy any certification or accreditation requirements for the particular profession or occupation.
  • Demonstrate access to sufficient financial resources to start and operate the professional practice and to support themselves and any dependents for a period of six months.

The applicant must also be prepared to conduct an exploratory visit to Northwest Territories to be able to provide documented assessment of business opportunities and general knowledge of the NWT.

The Process

  • Step 1:

    Making an Exploratory Visit and preparation of business proposal followed by an interview in NWT.

  • Step 2:

    Submission of a complete application and detailed business plan..

  • Step 3:

    Conducting a thorough assessment by the Assistant Deputy Minister (ADM) of Industry, Tourism and Investment (ITI). The Government of NWT will recommend that the Government of Canada issues a two-year temporary residence visa to the applicant.

  • Step 4:

    Applying for work permit at visa office responsible for the applicant’s country of origin.

  • Step 5:

    Developing the Business. When the applicant arrives in the NWT, he/she has up to two years to develop a business as described in the submitted business plan.

  • Step 6:

    Issuance of a nominee certificate upon substantial progress developing the business by completion or even before completion of two years.

  • Step 7:

    Making a separate application to the Government of Canada for permanent resident visas.

  • Step 8:

    Medical and security examinations and issuance of permanent resident visas.

Fees

NTNP Application Fee: No fee

Federal Processing Fee: C$ 550 for each person 19 years and over, C$ 550 for each child

Right of Permanent Residence Fee: C$ 490 for main applicant, C$ 490 for spouse
