The Latest Report Global Peace Index 2020 is isuued by Institute for Economic and Peace
The Global Peace Index 2020 (GPI) compares 163 independent states and territories (99.7 per cent of the world’s population) according to their levels of peacefulness and isssued by Institute for Economic & Peace (IEP).
The 1st Globale Peace Index was released in 2007, with subsequent reports released annually.
The Index covers three below domians to compare level of peacfulness of countries:
– Safety and Security,
– Ongoing Conflict
– Militarisation.
Canada is ranked 6th in the global ranking
Canada is ranked first in the region and and 6th in the global ranking while US is ranked second in the region and 121 position in the global. Iceland. Iceland is once again the most peaceful country in the region and
world, a position it has held since the inception of the index and New Zealand, Portugal, Austria and Danmaker occupied the second to fifth positions on the list.
Portugal is ranked 3rd in the global ranking
Canada is ranked 2nd in the region meaming Europe and and 3rd in the global ranking while Portugal was ranked in 4th in GPI 2018 and now Portugal could imporove its ranke in the list in GPI 2019 and 2020.

Of the three GPI domains, two recorded a deterioration while one improved. Ongoing Conflict deteriorated by 6.8 per cent and Safety and Security deteriorated by 3.3 per cent. However, Militarisation improved by 4.4 per cent.
